Avila

The Town of Stones and Saints

It is one of the towns with the highest number of Romanesque and Gothic churches per capita in Spain. That sounds like a claim with a built in margin of error. Never mind, hyperbolic statements aside Avila is a postcard perfect small, medieval town surrounded by 2.5kms of 3 metre thick, 12 metre high stone walls with 88 blocks of semicircular towers. Now that is a statistic worth mentioning.

Replete with mandatory cathedral, basilica, convent, museums and plaza it was a real treat to stop by, ogle and sip a coffee outside in the sun. There's a nominal entry fee but it was well and truly worth it. And there were few tourists even though it's less than 100km to the west of Madrid - it's lovely!
