Halfway between the Portugese border and Madrid the countryside is open, brown plains and agricultural landscapes supporting beets, cereals, especially barley and livestock (sheep and cattle and fighting bulls).
Also cultivated here are university students, Salamanca beinging one of the most important university cities in Spain. The most striking features upon approach are its cathedral and its orange colour from the local stone that it is constructed from. A tad busy during our stay it was quiet enough away from the large, central plaza. Like the other Spanish towns and cities it's a well maintained historical centre on a river with the standard Spanish feaures of cathedrals, squares and quiet backstreets.
