Hue

Not pronounced phonetically as "Hugh", as in Hefner, but as "Hway". There are plenty of worthwhile things to see in Hue despite its smallish size (350,000 Hueans - sounds like Hawaiians, except they're not).

The Citadel and Imperial City

The Citadel is the main attraction being impressive 2km x 2km walled ramparts and a moat surrounding the walls of the Imperial City which then surrounds the inner Purple Forbidden City which was, so the literature states, accessible only to the imperial family. I will take a chance and call BS on that as I'll bet they didn't sweep their own floors or carry out their dirty dishes.

The Citadel was overtaken by the Vietcong during their invasion of Hue during the Tet Offensive. The Americans, initially reluctant to use heavy weapons on historic structures decided they'd rather not continue with heavy casualties and so destroyed most of the inner structures to dislodge the interlopers. Work has been completed on a scaled down replica of the Citadel's Can Chanh Palace after the post-war Vietnamese government decided to moderate their dogma and drop their neglect of the site in favour of tourist income by accepting its imperialist history and maintaining it properly.

Tomb of Tu Duc

Planned by Emperor Tu Duc and constructed in 1867 as his royal mausoleum; the enormous expense and the forced labour spawned a coup plot. My visit is in recognition of the plotters and their workmanship rather than for the despotic autocrat who took credit for it.

Much of the amenity is for the living rather than the dead with open, treed grounds, lake, pavillions and terraces. It's also nice to know that the royalty who are in situ are all dead.

Imperial Tomb of Khai Dinh

A small yet elaborate, 3 tiered hillside tomb of the emperor Khai Din (1885 - 1925). The grey patina of the buildings and steps make this complex look a lot older than it actually is (completed 1931). The glass eyes of carved stone dragons are made from the punts of French wine bottles.
